Shanghai Mingyuan Art Museum was established in March 2004 with investment from the Mingyuan Group. According to the 2024 Directory of Shanghai Art Museums, its current operating address is B1, Building A, 1199 Fuxing Middle Road, Xuhui District, and it follows a year-round free admission policy.

When I visited today, I happened to catch the extended run of the contemporary art exhibition Sky Fragments—The City that Connects. Originally scheduled to close in August, the exhibition had its closing date postponed by two months. Although the exhibition takes the sky as its theme, its true subject is the city in which we live, along with the many things bound up with urban life—things visible, perceptible, and recoverable through memory.

One installation work was especially striking. It assembled discarded teaching materials collected from a middle school: chemical reagent bottles, a voltmeter, a slide projector, and even animal specimens. Spread across the floor in dense accumulation, these worn objects produced an immediate sense of time’s passage. At once, I could picture an old secondary-school classroom building. Another work, an oil painting, depicted a small open window with woods and a pastoral landscape beyond. It suddenly brought me back to the summer of 2023, when I stayed in an old château in the south of France and opened the window each morning to a similar view.

These contemporary artworks are, in essence, projections of the artists’ lived experiences and felt perceptions. For the viewer, resonance perhaps arises only when a work awakens some personal memory, experience, or act of imagination.

The museum offers free admission throughout the year. It is not large, and a visit generally takes around forty minutes. There is also a small reading area where visitors may freely browse books related to aesthetics and art. All in all, it is a compact yet refined art space.
